Invisalign Q&A

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are devices that gradually shift your teeth into straighter positions and better alignment. Just like braces, they treat many common types of tooth misalignment and crowding, which can cause difficulties when brushing and flossing.

Poor tooth alignment can also lead to temporomandibular joint pain, chewing problems, as well as airway and sleep issues.

During your initial consultation for clear aligners with Dr. Soren, he evaluates your overall oral health and the positions of your teeth using a digital X-ray. He also takes intraoral scans using the in-office digital scanner. These detailed 3D images help Dr. Soren predict the movement of your teeth during treatment and create aligners that fit comfortably.

You receive a series of aligners. Each aligner places gentle pressure on certain parts of your teeth to shift them into optimal positions.

You must wear your aligners for most of the day and while you sleep, only taking them out to brush your teeth, clean the aligners, and eat or drink anything other than water.

What are the advantages of clear aligners?

Clear aligners offer multiple advantages over braces, which are the more traditional and well-known treatment for tooth misalignment, wide gaps, and crowding.

At Missoula Dental, Dr. Soren understands that making a choice for orthodontic treatment can be intimidating and there are many factors to consider. If you’re a candidate, clear aligners offer these advantages:

  • No dietary restrictions
  • Less discomfort with adjustments
  • Fewer office visits throughout treatment
  • Discreet
  • Removable
  • Easy cleaning

Of course, there are certain situations in which braces or jaw surgery are the better options for aligning your teeth. Dr. Soren makes personalized recommendations and can help you make your decision if you have multiple options.

How long does treatment take with clear aligners?

During your consultation at Missoula Dental, Dr. Soren evaluates your teeth and calculates the time it’ll take to reach your ideal results with clear aligners. The treatment time correlates with how much our teeth need to move, so it’s impossible to predict how long you’ll be in treatment until you come in for an in-depth evaluation with Dr. Soren.

For most people, treatment using clear aligners takes 10-24 months. However, if you’ve had braces in the past and want to make a minor correction, you may be able to reach your goals with clear aligners in as little as 10 weeks.

Don’t let your concerns about braces hold you back from getting orthodontic treatment. To learn more about clear aligners and find out if you’re a good candidate for them, get in touch with Missoula Dental over the phone or book a consultation online today.
